I designed and scaled a social media app backend alongside the CTO. (25-30k DAU) I created a video recommendation system using redis, mongodb and elasticsearch. There were some hard Mongodb queries which were putting a lot of load so I put db sharding for the heavy tables, partitioned on various types of interactions on the posts. Currently I am also involved in the design architecture for the ai and backend systems at my current org (building 0 to 1). We are making an ai voice companion with llm calls through openrouter. I decided the change to use livekit instead of just webrtc for ai voice agents, which made the voice agent so much better, the tool calling became better, livekit internally handles a lot of things that eliminated the manual implementation and management for a lot of things. Livekit cloud also helps to scale smoothly in comparison to self hosting.
