Breedr
A digital record for every animal in the beef supply chain
Last verified August 29, 2026 · Updated daily
What Breedr is building
Breedr gives an individual animal a continuous digital record from birth to sale: weight, health events, breeding, family history, and management, entered by phone at the chute or pulled automatically off wearables. On top of that record sits a growth prediction model, and on top of that sits a marketplace where the animal is sold with its data attached rather than sold by eyeball and average. The unlock is that beef pricing has historically been lot-level and lossy. A rancher sells a pen of cattle at a blended price because the buyer cannot verify what any individual animal is. Wheal's framing is that producers should be able to 'see what they have, sell it for what it is worth and at the optimum moment' — all three of those clauses require per-animal data that persists across ownership changes, which is the hard part, because cattle change hands several times between birth and packer. There is also a financing layer: a cattle fund offering cash advances against the animals on the platform. That is the natural consequence of having verified per-animal data — once you can underwrite an individual animal's expected weight at a given date, you can lend against it. The data product becomes a credit product. The scale is real for an agtech company: more than 2 million cattle on the platform across roughly 6,500 farmers, close to $500 million of livestock on track to trade through the marketplace this year, and revenue up 230x since 2020. The next stated frontier is capturing genomic data into the same record.
Why this matters
Beef is one of the last major supply chains still running on paper and blended-lot pricing, and it sits at the intersection of two pressures that are both intensifying: producer margin compression and emissions accounting. Partech's Arnaud Minvielle put the thesis plainly — 'the economics and the impact of Breedr go hand in hand' — because the same per-animal data that lets a rancher sell at the optimum moment also lets the chain measure and reduce emissions per kilogram of beef. That alignment is rare enough that an impact fund led the round rather than participating in it. The timing argument is that Breedr has already crossed the threshold where the data becomes the moat. 2 million cattle and ~$500M of marketplace volume means the platform is now the reference record for a meaningful slice of the herd, and the marketplace makes the record valuable to the counterparty as well as the owner. Adding genomics on top of an installed base of that size is a very different proposition from starting a genomics product cold.

250+Hiring outlook
The round's stated use of funds is explicitly team growth plus geographic expansion into New Zealand, Europe and deeper into the US, and four roles are live on the careers page today. The score is held below 7 because the open reqs are all commercial rather than engineering, so the hiring is visible but narrow — the engineering expansion is implied by the genomics roadmap, not yet posted.

How to actually get hired at Breedr
Why applying the normal way doesn't work
Breedr runs an applicant tracking system, but hiring managers still work referrals first. A cold application to Breedr isn't dead, it's just fourth in line behind internal referrals, sourced candidates and recruiter pipelines.
Who to contact at Breedr
What to show them
Pick one region Breedr is expanding into (New Zealand or a specific European market) and write the go-to-market brief: who the first fifty producers are, what channel actually reaches them, and what has to be true about local traceability regulation for the record to be portable.

What Breedr screens for
An impact fund taking the lead position and putting a General Partner on the board, alongside LocalGlobe's growth vehicle also taking a seat, says both investors think this is a category winner rather than a bet on a sector. Two board seats going out in one Series B is a governance build-out, which usually precedes a management build-out. The candidate's edge is timing against geography: the round funds simultaneous expansion into New Zealand, Europe and deeper US territory from an Austin base, and there is no way to do that with the current commercial team. The four posted roles are the visible edge of a larger hire; being in the conversation before the next tranche of reqs goes up is the whole advantage.

Don't make these mistakes
Ian grew up on a family farm and started Breedr to help farmers like his parents get a fairer share of the value they produce. Do not send him a pitch about disrupting agriculture, and do not treat ranchers as a backward user base waiting to be modernised — that framing is the opposite of the company's founding premise and he will read it instantly. Also avoid pure-SaaS metrics theatre; this is a business where the product is used at a chute in the rain by someone whose margin is thin, and a candidate who talks about activation funnels without acknowledging the physical context is telling on themselves. The credible move is to show you understand the producer's economics, not the software's.
Mistakes that kill Breedr applications
Generic CVs stand out at a -person company — and not in a good way. Fastest path to rejection.
Skip 'I'm looking for...' — start with Beef is one of the last major supply chains still running on paper and blended-lot pricing, and it sits at the intersection of two pressures that are both intensifying: producer margin compression and emissions accounting and your specific angle on solving it.
The wait-and-hope strategy fails. Follow up on day five — response rates roughly double.
